After Hours (1985)
One Night, Countless Misadventures
Step into the chaotic underbelly of New York after dark with After Hours, a dark comedy adventure that follows one man’s descent into surreal madness when his attempt at one meaningful encounter spirals wildly out of control.
Paul Hackett (Griffin Dunne) is just looking for something anything to break the tedium of his dull job. A chance meeting with Marcy (Rosanna Arquette) sets him off into SoHo on what should be a simple meeting. What he gets instead is a night full of strange characters, bizarre setbacks (lost cab fare, stolen money, even a dead body), and increasingly desperate attempts just to get home. Along the way, Scorsese weaves tension and humor into the frighteningly empty late-night cityscapes, turning everyday manners and chance encounters into escalating absurdity.
Filled with memorable side characters, claustrophobic cinematography, and a pacing that never lets you settle, After Hours is less about the destination and more about how absolutely wrong a night can go.
