Coming to America (1988)
One Prince, Many Disguises, and the Search for True Love in Queens
Prince Akeem Joffer (Eddie Murphy), the pampered heir of the wealthy African kingdom of Zamunda, wants more than an arranged marriage. Determined to win a bride who loves him for who he is and not just for his title he ventures to New York City with his loyal aide Semmi (Arsenio Hall). Disguised as humble immigrants, they settle in Queens in modest surroundings, take odd jobs, and learn what it’s like to walk among the people. Along the way, Akeem meets Lisa McDowell (Shari Headley), whose warmth and character challenge his father’s world, and dangles romance, deception, and identity into a hilarious journey of self-discovery.
Director John Landis infuses Coming to America with lavish set pieces, cultural clash humor, and multiple roles played by Murphy and Hall that showcase their comedic range. The film balances fairy-tale charm with raunchier ’80s humor, pokes fun at wealth and tradition, and delivers a playful but heartfelt message about finding love, integrity, and authenticity. Generous moments of satire, a standout supporting cast, and one of the best Eddie Murphy comedies make this a classic that has only grown more beloved with time.
